Mazda Eunos 1.6 Mk1 1991 in Red

This 1991 Mazda Eunos 1.6 is quite a special car. Its yet another one that I originally sold to its last owner way back in 2010. The chap who has owned it for the last 16 years has spent a fortune on a turning it into a car that really stands out, looks terrific and drives incredibly well. I had the chance to buy this back and after attending to a few jobs, its now offered for sale again.

First, the basics: its finished in Classic Red and has covered around 183300km (around 114600 miles) and its fitted with a black vinyl soft top and has electric windows, power steering, an immobiliser and stainless steel sill tread plates.

Bodywork is in very good condition: the previous owner had the complete inner and outer sills replaced along with repairs to the rear wheel arches. Everything is absolutely sound, strong and solid. Underneath, its all good too with solid floors, subframes and everything else. As part of the preparation for sale, the underside has been treated with Dynax UB, an excellent corrosion inhibitor. Paintwork is very good indeed and wheel arches, wings etc are all clean and in good order with just the odd very small stone chip and very minor ding here and there. Its an incredibly good looking car though and really stands out wherever you take it.

So far then, a good solid car. However, its had quite a few well chosen modifications added which enhance the car’s character and makes it quite unique.

Lets look at the interior first: it has red leather seats (some minor wear but no holes or tears) and a lovely wood-rimmed Mota-Lita steering wheel along with a Razo gear knob and alloy handbrake handle. Less obvious are the leather door pulls, the toggle switches for hazard lights and ‘headlights up’ switch and the alloy stalks for wipers and lights. Carpets, dashboard and door trims are all in good clean condition and it has a decent JVC stereo fitted which sounds good.

The exterior also has some lovely touches and again some are more obvious than others such as the front lip spoiler and the 15” Rota alloys which I have just had refurbished and powder coated. These are also fitted with a matching set of Uniroyal Rainsport tyres. You may also notice the black windscreen surround (to match the wheels), Runabout stainless steel fuel lid, chrome door mirrors and alloy aerial mast. The front end has some unusual Zoom TSI grilles in place of the standard indicators while the head lights have been replaced with P700 units adding to the car’s classic looks. It also has alloy tow eyes fitted to front and rear.

Mechanically, its all in quite standard condition. The engine and gearbox are standard but have a cone air filter fitted along with an I.L. Motorsport (MX5 Parts) stainless steel exhaust. This is louder than standard and sounds just lovely. Thanks to the exhaust and filter, the car feels so responsive and its an absolute blast to drive it hard, get the revs up and experience how a decent MX5 should dive. The engine bay has a few nice additions such as an alloy oil cap, polished dipstick handle and a polished fuse cover lid. Its just been serviced with new oil, NGK spark plugs, and new silicone spark plug leads. Its also recently had a new radiator, water pump and cambelt. Brakes are completely standard and are in good order with good discs and pads.

Its fitted with £900-worth of adjustable BC Racing coil-over suspension and the car now sits a bit lower than standard and while its a touch stiffer, ride quality is, if anything, even better than standard. There are a few other mods that when added to the suspension set-up, give the car a sublime feel. It has extra chassis braces fitted to the lower rear (under the dif), lower front (under the gearbox) and an engine bay strut brace. It also has a proper 4-point TR Lane roll bar which also stiffens the chassis up no end. The result of this lot is that the car feels incredibly responsive with superb handling and steering feel. I have driven literally thousands of MX5s and this one is very much better to drive than your average example.

Its MOT tested until May 2027 and its just been through my 80+ point checklist and has been well prepared. There is a good collection of paperwork including old MOTs and receipts. It has an Autowatch immobiliser fitted and even has its original Mazda toolkit present. This is a quite exceptional car and it would cost a huge amount of time, money and knowledge to build another that drives as well or looks as good as this one. Price is a firm £6500.

There is also a walk-round video of the car on Youtube and while I'm no Jeremy Clarkson, its worth a look. Here is the link: Red Eunos- Youtube
